PROGRAM NOTES

Josef Lanner (1801–1843) was one of the pioneers of the Viennese waltz, shaping its development alongside his contemporary Johann Strauss Sr. *Die Romantiker*, Op. 167, composed in 1840, exemplifies Lanner’s lyrical elegance and refined orchestration. The waltz blends graceful melodies with delicate harmonies, evoking the charm and sentimentality of the Romantic era. Unlike the more exuberant works of Strauss, Lanner’s style leans toward a more intimate and expressive character, making *Die Romantiker* a quintessential example of his artistic craftsmanship.
